December 26, 2009 Featured Game

Last week's Featured Game was from the 2004 Tri-States Match between Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana between Dan Pocol and Ron Matous, Round 1, Board 4. This week, we are going to look at the next round from the same event and on the same Board 4. This time Ron Matous is White, and Dan Pocol is Black. In this game, Black wins a pawn on move 27, which he keeps until move 65, but material is not everything. White is able to exert pressure due to Black's cramped position. In the end, White breaks through, gets passed pawns on both sides of the Board which proves too much. White showed great patience and skill in milking out a win in this game.

As I said last week, these two players are two of my favorite players.
