TOURNAMENT RESULTS BUCKENDORF WINS UTAH OPEN! Idaho State Champion, Glen Buckendorf, won the 1967 Utah Open, played in Salt Lake City November 8-11, with a solid 6-1 score, five wins and two draws. Ted Hartwell knocked Don Benge out of the title in round 5 but then lost to Heilbut and Buckendorf, to place 8th, 4-3. Glen played all the top players to really earn the victory. All players were from Utah except for the two from Idaho, Benge from California, and Gentala and Lazaro from Colorado, plus Heaton from England. Wyoming was also represented by Kirk Cargill.
Since Idaho started its "Idaho Chess Foundation" last winter, we have accumulated almost $50.00, which is really quite good in a short period. This fund is being allowed to collect interest and the principal amount will not be touched. Our hope is that in a few years we will have enough money to use the interest for tournament prizes, etc. for the State Association. Perhaps some fund raising projects by some of our clubs will help the fund grow. It is a small start but it is a start which will someday amount to something. This report will be an irregular feature from now on, paid by annual dues from corresponding members. For complete Idaho and regional details, subscribe to the Northwest Chess Letter!
