Chess Players Win $1000

Fourteen chess players shared $1000 in cash prizes Sunday afternoon at the Open Chess Challenge sponsored by the Idaho Chess Association and Idaho State University's Chess Club. The two-day tournament ended Sunday at 4:30 pm with Randy Zumbrunnen winning the $250 first prize, Garrett Reynolds taking the $150 second prize, and Greg Nowak splitting the $100 third prize with Jeff Roland.

Spencer Case and Rebecca Hansis-O'Neill both won first place in the university student category, splitting the $100 prize. In the Reserve Category, Jershon Laimana won the $150 first prize; Katie Abderhalden took home the $100 second prize; Ricky Abderhalden, Alex Langrell, and Emily Patterson split the $50 third prize. The top unrated player was Katie Patterson who won $50.

The next chess tournament at ISU happens in October. Chess Club continues to meet every Friday from 2 PM to 5 PM in the Canoe Room in the Student Union Building. Beginners welcome.
