The Idaho Chess Association held the Northern Idaho Scholastic Novice Chess Tournament on January 31, 2009 at Winton Elementary School in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. Fifty students who had not before participated in a chess tournament outside their own school competed for trophies in four different playing sections. The organizers had planned on five different color coded sections, but combined the Second and Third Grade sections because only 2 players from the third grade actually came to play. Trophies were presented to individual winners in each grade level and also to winning teams in each section. First Grade and Seventh thru Twelfth Grade Sections were run as Double Round Robin due to the small number of participants.
