Death By Chess
(October 30, Twin Falls, ID)

Crosstable Pictures

by Barry Eacker

So when my wife (Vickie) found the new community room available in Twin Falls while reading the newspaper one day, she mentioned that it was at a mortuary/crematory. I found that extremely weird and instantly deduced that the only twisted, morbid and ghoulish people that would occupy such an odd venue would be chess players on Halloween.........I was right for once.........THANKS HUN......

The 2010 "Death by Chess" G/13 tournament took place October 30 at 9PM and finished October 31 at 2:30am. The only section in the event was named (of course) MACABRE. Ghoul Loonzovitch (Dan Looney) was instrumental in decoration while Good Witch Abderhalden (Angie) made the rest of us look like amateurs during post-event clean-up. Eighteen players came to the weird gathering and when all was said and done, Katie Abderhalden was the head Hob-Goblin, finishing 6.5/8. I somehow slid into second place and Abderhalden Ninja Robert was third, all three with 6.5/8. Next came Jeff Roland (5.5/8) and Fred bartell (5.0/8), then seven players with 4.0/8.

Spooky and campy music played throughout the event while some players games were obviously affected by the viewing of such fine screen classics as DARK SHADOWS and THE ASTRAL FACTOR and followed up by the original LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Some costumes were seen including Gothic Princess, Casualties of War (Complete with bullet holes to the head), some dude that looked like Bela Lugosi (or Ronald Reagan) wielding a knife, Ninja, Girlie Boy, Hot Wing Challengers, Throat Cut Lady, Beer Keg, Ghost of Chess Tournaments Yet to Come, Dingle Ball Lady and scariest of all, Birthday Boy Kevin Patterson wearing his normal get-up. Adam Porth mentioned in passing that we need to have "more themed tournaments". Heaven help us.....what's next?

THANK YOU to all who came with light hearts and heavy eyelids to participate in the craziness and especially to all those who assisted with clean up and decorative duties even though they had to drive 70 to 150 miles to get back home at some ghastly hour..........Special thanks to ROSENAU FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY for providing the outstanding venue!............SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
