Tournament Report

by Jeff Roland

The 2011 4th Annual ICU Treasure Valley Chess Championship was sponsored by Idaho Chess Union (ICU), and was rated by Rocky Mountain Chess. Entry was free and by invitation only. The time limit was Game/60. The Tournament Director was Jeff Roland.

Three players emerged with 3 points, but head-to-head tie-breaks as well as the Solkoff tie-break placed Kurt Douglas (Boise) first, Patrick Kirk (Boise) second, and Jeff Roland (Boise) third.

While turnout was a little low for this event (probably because it is July), the quality and enjoyment of the event was outstanding. The atmosphere was very friendly, and the games often proved challenging and rewarding.

For the first round, we actually moved the tables and played outside. The weather was just too good to ignore. It was so nice to take in all that fresh air, listen to the summer sounds (a squirrel doing his thing, joggers jogging, and cars passing by), and the games were excellent.

In round 2, we moved back indoors and continued to the end of the tournament, which ended at 6:00 p.m., right on schedule.

Production note: The Pre-tournament initial rating for Patrick Kirk was originally listed as 1600. That appears to be inaccurate (my bad!). Per the TD's request, ICU has decided to change that initial Pre-tournament rating to be 1700.

ICU is grateful to Kurt Douglas for his help in getting Redeemer Lutheran Church as a playing site, and to Jeff Roland who volunteered his time to direct the tournament. Donations went to cover expenses, namely, the plaques that were made by Masons Trophy in Twin Falls.

I want to thank everyone for coming and playing, and for your great attitudes and friendship. Oh, and thank you all for the great birthday cake! Please continue to support over-the-board chess whenever you can. There's nothing quite like it!
